For newborns and small infants, simply unsnap the set and use the smaller insert. For larger infants and toddlers, snap back together and use as a set for a total of 6 thirsty layer of hemp/fleece or microterry (You may even be able to use only the larger insert; alone, it's comparable to a medium Joey Bunz.) Wonder-Fulls are serged with Perma Core polyester-wrapped thread for a super durable seam. They are made with polyacetal resin snaps--the most durable snaps available. They won't rust or warp, and are unaffected by urine. To add to the durability of this product, the end of the serging is woven back into the seam to ensure that it won't unravel after many washings.
Please note that Wonder-Fulls are no longer pre-washed before sewing. They will need to be washed and dried 2 to 3 times on hot prior to use. This necessary step will remove the natural oils in the hemp fabric, allowing it to reach maximum absorbency. Absorbency will continue to improve with the first several washes.
